Macadamia oil is the best oil for the health-conscious

In this blog post we want to tell you all about the wonders of heart healthy Macadamia Oil. It’s an unsung superfood that's made from Australia’s only commercially farmed native nut. Our nuts are grown in the Nambucca Valley on the New South Wales mid coast, on small farms - many of which are organic - where our farmers pay extra attention to every tree so that they can guarantee quality produce.

Our macadamia oil is delicious and light with a warm, buttery flavour so it doesn’t overwhelm other ingredients. Did you know that macadamia oil has the highest heat point of any cooking oil? The subtle flavour and the high heat point means it is great for both hot and cold dishes. Better still our oils have multiple health benefits and  they can be used on your hair and skin.

Compared with olive oil, macadamia oil has a higher concentration of monounsaturated fats, so it's the best choice for a healthy heart.

What makes an oil heart healthy?

As you know, these days it can be tough sorting out what is actually healthy and what’s a fad but the research tells us it comes down to:

  • Predominant fat type. Monounsaturated is the best and trans fats are the worst.
  • Omega content - look for 3, 6, 7 and 9 omegas and above all, the ratios of these omegas.
  • Antioxidants
  • How the oil nuts are grown (a lot of canola, for example, is genetically modified)
  • How the oil is produced. Cold pressed is the best as it does not use refining or processes that can deplete health benefits.

Comparing Oils - why is Macadamia oil best for you?

All oils are different and macadamia oil beats, all other commercial oils on many health metrics. So when you are choosing your oil look for one that is:

  • Rich in Monounsaturated Fats: Our oils are composed of about 80% heart-healthy fats, this means they help reduce bad cholesterol (LDL) levels while increasing good cholesterol (HDL) and so they promote overall heart health.
  • High in Antioxidants: Our oils are rich in antioxidants, particularly tocotrienols, a form of vitamin E. They have high levels of Oleic Acid, which is linked to helping health immunity and reducing inflammatory markers, and Palmitic Acid which helps prevent early aging.  Most especially, antioxidants protect the body against oxidative stress and free radicals. These can cause cellular damage and contribute to chronic diseases such as cancer and heart disease.
  • Supports Skin Health: Beyond their culinary uses, macadamia oils are also fantastic natural moisturisers. The oil's non-greasy texture makes it suitable for all skin types, this includes people with sensitive or acne-prone skin.
  • Omega-3/Omega-6 Ratio: A lower ratio is generally considered to be healthier but an omega-6 to omega-3 ratio that is too high, may contribute to excess inflammation in the body. So this potentially raises the risk of various diseases.
Oil Saturated Fat (%) Monounsaturated Fat (%) Polyunsaturated Fat (%) Omega-3/ Omega-6 Ratio Antioxidants
    Macadamia Oil 8-10 80-85 1-2 Low High
    Olive Oil 14-17 72-78 7-11 Low High
    Coconut Oil 86-92 6-8 1-2 Low Moderate
    Canola Oil 6-7 19-21 58-63 High Low
Vegetable Oil (average) 12-16 21-25 50-55 Moderate Low
