The earliest form of brittle can be traced to Mesopotamia, then it was made with sesame and honey. The origin of Chikki, an Indian sweet made of nuts and jaggery (concentrated sugarcane juice), is lost in the mists of time.
Trade and cultural exchange brought similar sweets to Europe and onwards to continental America. By the 19th century, nut brittle became popular in the United States due to the volume of sugar cane production and the popularity of almonds, pecans and peanuts. Its popularity has only grown, and the simple ingredients means there are numerous variations and flavors around the world.
